Carrbridge Golf Club played 9th September 2020
The day before playing Nairn Dunbar golf course the second time, we left the area of Spey and headed south.
The idea was to move toward Glasgow, play some of the courses on our way. Among others one or two in the area of Aberfeldy – not because of the courses, but to visit the Aberfeldy distillery.
I once tasted a 15 year old malt from that distillery. One of the best Scotts malts I have ever tasted
Anyway, it wasn’t to be (this time).
Some local golfers from Nairn recommended us to make a stop on our way south at the little town named Boat of Garten and play the 18 hole course.
That we did. A report about that later.
Just before Boat of Garden, we passed a 9 hole course on our left hand side, made a U-turn and turned around to take a look.
It looked wonderful.
The course was built on a combination of forest and heath land.
The weather was fine. A bit wind and sunshine, the clubhouse very humble but with a staff of 2 very helpful people and the green fee £25 each for 18 holes. So why not?
I have said it before. If you don’t have the chance or time to play an 18 hole course twice or more, then playing a 9 hole course twice is (most of the times) a lot more interesting and pleasurable.
Our 2 rounds on this course was just a confirmation of that.
Very picturesque with some short but tricky holes.
This is how they are presenting their golf course and club:
“Carrbridge Golf Course is a real Highland Gem. It was originally constructed over 100 years ago, presenting an attractive and challenging 9 holes with truly magnificent views of the Cairngorms and surrounding hills.
Extensively improved in recent years, the wide fairways and restricted heavy rough make it most enjoyable for our many visitors.
The 7thwith the green 30 feet above the fairway level and the 174 yard par three 8thbring many golfers” down to earth”, as do the small streams on several of the holes.
The Clubhouse, famous for its red tin roof, offers a choice of light snacks and home-baking, refreshments and golf accessories.”
I can only recommend: if you ever get to this area of Scotland, go and play the course. We played the course twice in a little less than 3 hours.
Only negative: The club house bar doesn’t have a liquor license.
Facts about the course
I haven’t found any information about the course architect or about the history about when and by whom is was established. But I got a picture of this membership ticket:
My game
I enjoyed the 2 rounds. Could have scored better, but don’t we golfers always think that?
Course record
Formal evaluation
I don’t think that it makes a lot of sense to make my normal evaluation.
Just sufficient to say: It is a great walk, in a great nature on a course with a lot of challenging holes.
But of course, if you belong to the type that love to take your driver and smash the ball 250 meter, then this is not a course for you.
Your comments, recommendations and questions are welcomed.
Hi Finn & Ezra
It was a pleasure to meet you both at Boat of Garten. Not my best golf but enjoyed the course, the setting & your company. A course that rewards a straight drive (not something I have) & a bit of course knowledge (blind shots were challenging). If I can help you with a car in the future please do get in touch. Applaud you both for your golfing adventure & hopefully you can inspire people like myself to follow in your footsteps!
Hi Graham.
It was so nice to have you as company on the round. Some great shots on your side. Have a look at the blog, Finn has published the review on Boat of Garten.
Good luck with the other 46 courses.
