Golf is suppose to be fun
On our way to George we passed a little hamlet called Albertinia and there we knew was a nine -hole golf course. I think that it is only known – at least to some people – because that’s where Louis Oosthuizen played his first golf. The course was established back in 1933 and as you can see from the pictures still have greens made of sand blended with oil.
Visiting a golf course like this are taking you back in time. The course is not very well maintained to say the least. It was not my intention to play the course. We just wanted to have a look.
But then we saw 4 kids, probably 8 to 12 years old, running around playing. They had 2 old golf bags with a blend of different old clubs. They just played, didn’t follow any rules, didn’t always played in the direction toward the greens or the holes in the order according to the layout. They didn’t even count their strokes. They just had fun.
They always used a tee – that is; a kind of tee. Getting closer we could see that the tee they used was the lid from a drinking bottle. See pictures. How inventive.
I decided to go and talk to these guys and started to play a couple of holes with them.
Fantastic to see their joy and enthusiasm and of course their interest in my bag and clubs some of which they got to try.
After 2 or 3 holes 4 or 5 more kids joined the group. All playing, but now they there wasn’t a ball to all of them, so 2 or 3 shared the same ball. We left them with a number of my golf balls.
The whole experience was a reminder; never forget that golf is just for fun.
Joep is was so nice to see him interacting with the young boys
Ellen I hope you are going to start a business with the new golf shoes. We might have frozen toes in DK
Very nice story!!! If you can be like a child, you remain ever young. Well done.
