Portmahomack (Tarbat) Golf Club played on 30 August, 2020
To tell you the truth. From our B&B we were on our way to Tain Golf course. But something went wrong with the GPS and we ended up at a nine hole golf course outside a little coastal city with the name of Portmahomack.
The golfclub is also called Tarbat Golf Club.
And that, I can tell you, was a great find.
But first, let me clarify where we are.
On our way down we played Brora golf course (the red dot).
Our new B&B was close to Tain and the golf course of Tain golf club was some miles south east of the city.
At a certain stage driving to the Tain golf course we realized that the GPS was not taking us toward that course but toward a course on the tip of the peninsula. See next map.
This is what is written about the area:
“The area was the centre of considerable activity during the time of the Picts, Portmahomack was also the site of a very early Christian monastery, possibly founded by Saint Columba in the late 500s. The village grew between it and the shore, taking advantage of the shelter of a location on the west side of Tarbat Ness.”
Tarbat is not a 10 million dollar golf course.
It’s build by the locals and not for tourist looking for glamorous courses to play. And I can tell you – it was fun to play. And the good thing with a 9-hole course is that playing the 9 holes twice, gives you a chance to get to know the holes.
Fact about the course
Nine hole. 18 holes par 69. SSS 66, 65 and 69 for the ladies. From white tee 5188, yellow 4880 and red 4736 – all in yards.
Course record
Mrs. Cara S. Thomson with a hdc of 1 made a 69. Mr. Allen Everett with a hdc of +1 made a 63.
My game
A course a bit short of 5000 meter seems to be ideal for me.
Total score 71. Just 3 over par.
But I had a doubt if my shot from the grave yard was in accordance to the rule. Eza was sure, she could not find any info and there was no white sticks to mark out of bounds (she is always nice to me when in control of the score card).
But now writing this and taking a closer look at the scorecard, on the back it says: “1. Out of bounds: Beyond any wall, fence, or line of white posts indicating the boundaries of the course . . . . “
So so sorry, I didn’t score below my age.
